Coming of Age Films

babykeiko asks…

Does anyone have a recommended list of foreign coming of age films?

I seem to recall a post somewhere (on the Story Friends Board?) about foreign coming of age films like those from the makers of Kids or Bilitis or Beau Pere,ย all of which I have watchedย onlineย with red cheeks. Can anyone point me in the direction of such a list or source? I hope someone remembers!

babykeiko, check out this link: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls008867051/

Thanks Joe – very helpful start. And a few that I recall are on that list. I personally like films that have an older/younger theme to it, and are about girls/women in that type of relationship. Equally interested in girls discovering with each other as well. Thank you naughty mommy for setting this up as a separate item. Hope people will share their finds!

  3. I’ve never seen the movie, so I can’t say how good it is, but when I was young I found the paperback in a used book store and it gave me, shall we say, many hours of delight. The title is Therese and Isabelle:

Two young girls experience awakening sexuality in the heated atmosphere of a Swiss girls’ boarding school…

Another similar one that I have seen and really liked is Naissance des pieuvres (Water Lilies).

And in searching around, I found this…

Thank you, Naughty Mommy, for your research.
What strange coincidences appear in these collections.
All the old Rock Hudson and Doris Day movies from the fifties (what an innocent era that was, at least in public life).
And such a strange inclusion by the cookie with the digestive problems, Emmerdale, a British TV soap set in a Yorkshire village. It did have a lesbian vet, a long time ago, but in this context why not Brookside, a British TV soap set in Liverpool which featured British TV’s first lesbian kiss โ€“ Anna Friel was one half of the liaison (and my apologies to her partner whose real name I can’t remember).

Naughty Mommy: some of those… no… most of those are new to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love the kind of movies that make no problem of nudity/sex but also have a bit of a story to them. If I want porn I know where to find that… but something that both excites as well as tells a story is nice for those lazy Sundays when you never get dressed and just watch, read and… play. I can do that for hours ๐Ÿ˜‰

Some of my favorites are (as mentioned) Bilitis (I think everyone has seen that one, right?). I also like Beau Pere, not so much because it is a Man and a girl, but because the girl is so, so hot, French and fully nude

I have also found some movies that are, I guess both porn as well as decent stories like:

    – the weird, trippy Madoleszenca http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076749/
    – “Diablo in corpo” because of the female actress, she has such gorgeous boobs… http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090944
    – mentioned already but Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby
    – “Ken Park” – again not so much for the hetero sex but there is a great scene where the boy licks his adult female lover and she is absolutely gorgeous. I believe her name is Zara McDowell. I think she has a real orgasm as her nipples get so, so hard (and make me so warm inside!).http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209077
    – I can’t find the name of this movie, but it has a very steamy lesbian seduction scene in it with Alyssa Milano. I love the seduction of the photographer and how she leads Alyssa into showing more… doing more… giving in… It was in fact one of the inspirations to my story about a photographer seducing her young model, and the story that JetBoy and I rewrote and expanded. Here is that scene: http://www.redtube.com/425208

There are some other movies I like… probably more x-rated that combine cinematography and just plain sex. Love to see what others like!

Lisa and I watched “Blue is the Warmest Color” on Netflix. And “La Robe Du Soir” is available on Youtube with English subtitles. It’s good, especially if you like seeing the young actress in her panties. (We did!) We haven’t seen “Loving Annabelle” or “Bloomington,” but they are also currently on Netflix. Actually, you can see a lot of good lesbian film on Netflix, though it appears some prudes have rated many of them with one star, and as we all know there is a LOT of bigotry in America. Some people think Jesus said to hate everyone you disagree with. Anyway, I don’t know how the rating thing works, but there are a lot of the lesbian-themed films on Netflix that have a one-star rating. “But I’m a Cheerleader” was on Netflix for a while, but I don’t think it’s on there anymore. I recognize many of the movies from the link Naughty Mommy supplied. I may have seen them on Netflix’s list.

  7. babykeiko says:

Thank you Raoul – I wonder of the rest of the movie is equally interesting ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Raoul says:

    Nope ๐Ÿ™

  9. Tammy says:

Bilitis was one of my favorites, the scenes made you wish they were x-rated because you wanted them to continue. But the love screens between the two school girls and between the mature woman and young Bilitis were very hot. The other film I enjoyed, and forgive me I’m drawing a blank on the actress name, she played in Blue Lagoon, but in this film she was the daughter of a whore and they didn’t show the love scenes, but she went with her mother who said to a customer “she only does oral”. Later they have an auction where the men bid on taking her cherry.

  10. The movie you’re thinking of, Tammy, is Pretty Baby, starring sexy Susan Sarandon as the prostitute mom of 12-year-old Brooke Shields. If you’re lucky enough to find an uncut version, there is a very lovely scene of young Brooke taking a bath, along with the other delights you mentioned.

  11. Cheryl says:

I had heard Pretty Baby was a very hot mainstream movie when I was a teenager. I got ahold of the video of it and watched it when I was 16. It made me very glad I had my own VCR in my room by then. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have had a major crush on the young Brooke Shields ever since. She’s still very pretty, but those scenes in that movie… O my God!

I just checked youtube, and the movie is there, in parts.

I think I have our weekend planned. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  12. Lily says:

Thanks for the list of movies, especially that big one, Naughty Mommy. I’ll definitely make good use of it ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. Poppabear or PoppaClyde2 says:

Out of curiousity I decided to look up the files on Pretty Baby, having recalled the fuss over Brooke Shields when the film came out.
There are some lovely pix of her at the time. In the candid on-set pix she has a lovely infectious grin, as you would expect from a 12-year-old girl.
There are also some posed publicity pix in particular one in which she is wearing a cap-sleeved broderie anglais shirt and red and black stockings. In addition, she is wearing white cotton panties โ€“ very anachronistic for the film’s period โ€“ early twentieth century New Orleans โ€“ so I can only assume they were her own white cotton panties. Lovely phrase, isn’t it? White cotton panties.

try google search images and we for Freedom to Love (1969) “Freiheit fรผr die Liebe”

  15. babykeiko says:

Hi Kim: I found the movie and you are right, there is a very delightful scene in there! It is definitely true that the morals of 1970s Europe were vry different from anywhere else i guess… Thank you for sharing your suggestion!

  16. Tanya says:

You mentioned “foreign films” with a coming of age theme. “Foreign” is a matter of perspective. There is a movie foreign to most of you, but not to me, is an Aussie movie called “Felicity”. Made in the late 70s or early 80s. There is a cute little erotic scene between schoolgirls and a couple of longer girl/girl scenes. Not hard core by any means, but deliciously erotic.

Another interesting Aussie movie, and I know I am being parochial, is Picnic At Hanging Rock. Not in the least an erotic movie, but there are a group of very pretty schoolgirls and it made an impact on me. I think I was about 11 or 12 when I saw it and all I thought was being one of those girls and holding hands etc. Perhaps eroticism is in the eye of the beholder.

  17. Tanya, your comment also made me think of Heavenly Creatures, a very good and rather sexy movie made in New Zealand about two teenage girls who fall in love. Worth watching!

    • PoppaBear says:

I haven’t seen Felicity, but both Picnic at Hanging Rock and Heavenly Creatures are excellent examples of the very good films made in Australia and New Zealand.

  18. PoppaBear says:

Don’t know Felicity, but both Picnic at Hanging Rock and Heavenly Creatures are excellent examples of the very good films that have been made in Austtralia and New Zealand.
If any of you can find then you will not be disappointed; good stories, good direction and camera work and well acted.

  20. 30smom says:

I saw the remake of Picnic At Hanging Rock but haven’t yet had the chance to see Felicity. 1970’s movies with lesbian scenes are usually worth watching at least once so thanks! I might try and track that one down.

I think foreign was asked to weed out American coming of age films which lack sensuality. But they aren’t all bad so I included some in my suggestions below:

There’s a 1995 American film called Angela (by Rebecca Miller) about two sisters 10 and 6. There is a scene where they kiss passionately. The younger of the two girls also frequently flashes her panties and even gets fully nude at one point. And there’s a gorgeous scene where the girls are in the tub with their mom. I hope I’m allowed to share movie stills:

Then there’s a 1992 French short film called Rispondetemi. This movie is about a lesbian whose life flashes before her eyes as she is rushed to the hospital. In one scene a little girl is standing nude in a tub while her father is washing her. Then she says, This is how Mom does it, and she takes the wash cloth and starts to masturbate with it.

There’s a 1996 American film called Hide and Seek by Su Friedrich. This goes back and forth between actresses portraying young girls experimenting with lesbianism in the 60s and interviews with the women who are telling the stories.

Show me Love (Sweden) My favorite scene is at the end when the two girls emerge hand in hand and one announces to their classmates “I’m going to go home now and fuck my girlfriend.”

    Series:

Sugar Rush (UK) about a high school lesbian whose infatuated with her best friend.

The OC (USA). Season 2 features a relationship between two girls that was kinda revolutionary for its time.

South of Nowhere was an American series on The-N which was basically Nickeldeon for teens so it was very G-rated but it featured lesbian relationships. This and The OC made a huge impression on young girls all over America including myself.

If you’re in Australia you might be interested in a series call Bad Behaviour (2023) about a lesbian revisiting her time at an Australian boarding school. Some of the sex scenes were pretty good.

Undressed (1999) was a steamy late night series on MTV that featured both hetero and same-sex couples. Some of them were lesbian couples either in college or high school.
