Jaime Glossen looked around the Cuarto de la Nina, largely empty of customers now. Only one other customer besides her remained, a poor guy who had had way too many to drink. He was passed out at one of the tables and Tank was in the process of waking him up.<\/p>\n
Smiling, she turned back to Annie, who was wiping down the bar, \u201cYou should have cut him off a long time, ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI did,\u201d Annie said, shaking her head, \u201che always sneaks his own in. I’d be upset but he tips really, really well.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh,\u201d Jaime said, looking down at her own drink. It was only her second and it was still half full, a moral victory for her.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey, I never did thank you,\u201d Annie said, pausing with the dish towel in her hand, \u201cyou know, for setting up my ‘mobile bartending business’.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you say it like that,\u201d Jaime said, laughing, \u201cyou make it sound shady. All I did was give you a legitimate reason for your income. You host parties, get paid for it in cash. It is close enough to the truth to appease my sense of propriety.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSeriously, though,\u201d Annie said, smiling at her, \u201cthanks. And not just for me. Some of the dancers have been telling me you helped them set up savings accounts, started investing their money for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
A little uncomfortable, Jaime said, \u201cIt was the right thing to do. If you knew how, you’d have done the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

Touched by the gesture, Jaime said, \u201cThank you, Annie.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJust don’t tell, Julio.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay,\u201d she said, laughing.<\/p>\n
\u201cEliza tells me it is your birthday,\u201d Annie said, putting the last of the liquor bottles away and locking the cabinet.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid she,\u201d Jaime said, groaning, \u201cI hoped she wouldn’t tell anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, Tank and I got you a little something,\u201d she said hauling three bottles of champagne from under the bar and setting them on the bar, \u201cthe good stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat in the world am I going to do with three bottles of champagne?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, you see,\u201d she said, leaning forward, \u201cthe girls are throwing you a party. Tank and I are taking off but the Cuarto is staying open late tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA party,\u201d Jaime said, blinking in surprise.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is sure to be a birthday to remember,\u201d she said, digging in her pants pocket and putting a key on the bar, \u201ctell Eliza to lock up and slide the key under the door when you leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
