Flopping on her bed, Sarah stared up at the ceiling. She had just taken her laptop and phone downstairs to her dad, severing her connection to the outside world. Almost an hour late to dinner, she knew she was going to be in trouble. Her parents had grounded her for a week, which was a lot less than she had expected. Still, she was going to be stuck in the house for seven days, save to go to school.<\/p>\n
Worse, she couldn\u2019t even let Mindy know what was going on. She had fully expected to be grounded a month or more, not just a week and she couldn\u2019t even tell the girl the good news.<\/p>\n
The girl had walked her most of the way home, all the way to the head of the path that led to the pond she skinny dipped in the summer. Mindy had pulled her into her arms, gave her a heated kiss before letting her go to face her punishment.<\/p>\n
Thinking about that kiss now, Sarah sighed, thinking it was going to be a really long week. It had only been a couple of hours, but she already missed Mindy. She had to smile and shake her head at how bad she had it for the girl.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love her,\u201d Sarah said, out loud to no one in particular. It was the first time she had said, but she was pretty sure she meant it.<\/p>\n
Closing her eyes, she could clearly see Mindy as she had looked wearing that pale blue bustier. Mindy had looked so sexy in that thing. Starting to get horny, again, Sarah forced that mental image out of her head.<\/p>\n
She thought about the picture she had taken of herself in the black and purple corset and her heart beat a little faster. After leaving Mindy just inside the woods, she had sent the picture to the girl, then deleted the evidence from her phone. Laughing, Sarah wondered what the girl had thought, when she opened the message.<\/p>\n
A naughty shiver worked up her spine, and she wondered what she had been thinking, first taking the photo, then sending it to Mindy. Grinning, she thought, Mindy is right about me having a kinky streak<\/em><\/p>\n After what she had learned today, Sarah could say the same about her girlfriend. Mindy had admitted to having slept with Erin and Ashley at the same time. Maybe Natty, too.<\/p>\n \u201cNatty,\u201d Sarah said, suddenly remembering the dead girl. Her heart started beating faster when she thought about her exchange with Erin and Ashley\u2026<\/p>\n …Are you sure?\u201d Erin asked, glancing at Sarah, \u201cdo you think you are ready to meet Natty?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Laughing, Sarah asked, \u201cWhy does everyone assume I\u2019m going to put it on?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cNo one has resisted so far,\u201d Ashley said.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cOh,\u201d Sarah said, then shook it off, \u201cbesides even if I do try it on, doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019ll go to the Place of Locked Doors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019d be the first not to,\u201d Erin said…<\/em><\/p>\n They had seemed pretty sure that she would try the lingerie on if she saw it and they had been right. They were also pretty sure that she would visit the Place of Locked Doors because she put the black lingerie on. Were they right about that, too? Would she meet Natty in person tonight when she went to sleep?<\/p>\n Chewing on her lip, Sarah hoped they were wrong. The whole idea of the Place of Locked Doors creeped her out.<\/p>\n She sat up, reaching for her TV remote. She needed something to distract her from thinking about the possibility of going to the Place of Locked Doors when she managed to fall to sleep tonight. Flipping through the channels, she was disappointed to find nothing on that grabbed her attention.<\/p>\n \u201cThis sucks,\u201d Sarah said, turning off the TV.<\/p>\n She still needed something to distract her, so she looked around her room. Her eyes went to her school backpack, and she had to shake her head that she wished she had some homework to do. She started to look away when she suddenly sat up straighter and said, \u201cHomework!\u201d<\/p>\n Getting off her bed, she headed downstairs, through the kitchen and into the garage. She shivered as the cold concrete found her bare feet. She hurried to a bookcase her father kept on the back wall of the garage. As a caretaker, he had dozens of books on maintaining the various equipment he was responsible for. Scanning the titles on the shelf, Sarah hoped for something on electric motors or water pumps, or anything that could help her figure out how to get hot water into Mindy\u2019s cabin in the woods. She found one on electrical systems, pulled it off the shelf. Still looking, she found one on plumbing and grabbed that one, too. None of the other volumes caught her attention, and she groaned. The two she had found probably wouldn\u2019t be any help. She took them with her anyway, as she headed back inside.<\/p>\n Her dad was in the kitchen, grabbing a beer from the fridge. He looked up when Sarah came through the door from the garage. His eyes went to the manuals in Sarah\u2019s arms, then up to his daughter\u2019s eyes. He closed the fridge and leaned against the sink. As he twisted the lid off his beer, he nodded at the books, asked, \u201cWhat are you up to?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cUm\u2026 research,\u201d Sarah said, figuring it was technically true.<\/p>\n \u201cResearch, huh?\u201d He parroted, waving her over. Setting his beer down, he took the books from Sarah, reading the titles out loud. He met her eyes, asked, \u201cWhat exactly are you researching?\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah looked at him a long moment, then decided just to tell him the truth, \u201cI found this bicycle-powered generator. It\u2019s rusted up, and the batteries are corroded\u2026 I was hoping there would be something in here about fixing it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd the plumbing manual?\u201d He asked, curiosity in his eyes.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is an electrical water pump\u2026 I\u2019m pretty sure the batteries run it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n He looked at her a long moment, then set the books on the sink, said, \u201cYou aren\u2019t going to find what you need in here.\u201d<\/p>\n Sighing, she said, \u201cI know, but I can\u2019t get online.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cCan\u2019t it wait until you aren\u2019t grounded?\u201d He said, amused.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t have anything better to do, so…\u201d She said, shrugging.<\/p>\n \u201cWhere is this bicycle-powered generator at?\u201d He asked, picking up his beer.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is an old cabin in the woods,\u201d Sarah said, waiting for her father to ask for more information.<\/p>\n \u201cDo you want me to help you fix it?\u201d He asked, sipping his beer.<\/p>\n \u201cNot really,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n He laughed and asked, \u201cDon\u2019t want me to know where this cabin is, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNo,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Pushing away from the sink, he put his arm around her shoulder and said, \u201cCome on. Let\u2019s go find the information you need.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cReally?\u201d Sarah asked, surprised.<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ve piqued my interest with this generator,\u201d he said, smiling at her, \u201cI\u2019m curious myself.\u201d<\/p>\n ————————————————-<\/p>\n Yawning, Sarah set her printouts aside. She and her dad had found a bunch of information online about making and maintaining a bicycle powered generator. She had just finished reading the last of it, and her eyes were feeling grainy. Still, she had learned a lot, thought she could fix the generator at the cabin. She was going to need some WD40 and a couple of new batteries, probably would need to replace all the cables that linked the batteries. That was just for the generator; there was a lot more work to be done on the water pump.<\/p>\n She yawned, again, and glanced at her alarm clock. It was already after ten, so she rolled out of bed and headed to the bathroom to brush her teeth. Back in her bedroom, she slipped out of her clothes, save for her panties. Turning out the lights, she got between the sheets. It had been a long day and no sooner did her head hit her pillow did she feel herself starting to drift off. She drifted and drifted and it wasn\u2019t until she was ready to nod off, that the Place of Locked Doors popped into her head.<\/p>\n Researching what she needed to do to get the plumbing up and running at the cabin had done the trick, had distracted her from where she might go when sleep took her. Her last thought as she slipped into sleep was, I hope Mindy was wrong<\/em><\/p>\n Sarah felt a disorienting sense of motion and opened her eyes. Gasping, she realized she wasn\u2019t in her bedroom, anymore. Looking around wide-eyed, she thought she was in Erin\u2019s room. Well, not Erin\u2019s but Natty\u2019s. Her heart racing, she realized it had happened. She was in the Place of Locked Doors.<\/p>\n \u201cShit,\u201d Sarah said, looking around nervously.<\/p>\n \u201cSo you did show up.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah gasped, whirling around to find Natty standing in the open doorway. There was no mistaking the girl, and she was even more beautiful in person.<\/p>\n Laughing, she said, \u201cJesus, you scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n Smiling, Natty said, \u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d Sarah said, her heart still racing, \u201cYou don\u2019t seem surprised to see me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cErin said you might be coming,\u201d Natty said, coming into the room. She grabbed something off the bed, holding it out to Sarah, \u201cYou are probably going to need this.\u201d<\/p>\n Taking it, Sarah saw it was a short silk robe. She frowned, wondering why Natty was giving it to her. Looking down at herself, she gasped. All she had on were the panties she had worn to bed. Her face red, she hurriedly slipped into the robe, tying it in place. She felt better, but not much. The robe was very short, barely covered her panties.<\/p>\n Grinning sheepishly at Natty, she said, \u201cWell, that was embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n Laughing, Natty said, \u201cThe girls should have warned you to wear something else to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThey failed to mention it,\u201d Sarah said, looking around, \u201cthis is Erin\u2019s room, back in the real world, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n Smiling, Natty nodded.<\/p>\n \u201cWeird,\u201d Sarah said, then glanced at Natty, \u201cno offense.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNone taken,\u201d Natty said, amused, \u201ccome on. I told Erin I\u2019d call her when you arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhere are we going?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n \u201cThe living room,\u201d Natty said, then grinned, \u201csort of an ironic name, now.\u201d<\/p>\n Snorting in surprise, Sarah laughed. The ghost\u2019s levity helped ease Sarah\u2019s nerves, some. The fact that the Place of Locked Doors didn\u2019t seem all that different than the real world helped, too. As she followed Natty downstairs, Sarah started to understand how the others could get used to coming here. It wasn\u2019t as scary or creepy as she thought it would be.<\/p>\n It\u2019s still a little creepy<\/em>, Sarah thought, remembering this was technically the afterlife. Not Heaven or Hell, but somewhere in between. She was walking in a place not meant for those who hadn\u2019t breathed their last breath. If anything, she<\/em> was the ghost here.<\/p>\n Instead of going to the living room, Natty walked into the kitchen, opening the fridge. She pulled out a couple of Cokes, offering one to Sarah. Sarah looked at the glass bottle for a long moment, then shrugged and took it. Twisting off the cap, she took a drink. She didn\u2019t know what she was expecting, but she was surprised when the fizzy, syrupy liquid tasted like Coke.<\/p>\n It got her thinking, and she realized all of her senses were functioning. She could feel the cool tile under her feet, could smell something cooking on the stove. Everything was vivid, real. This place of the dead was alive with stimuli, not ethereal but solid like the real world.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat smells good?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n \u201cDinner,\u201d Natty said, smiling, \u201cchicken noodle soup.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOut of a can?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n \u201cNo,\u201d Natty said, her smile widening, \u201cMindy has inspired me to learn how to cook.\u201d<\/p>\n Glancing at the clock on the wall, Sarah said, \u201cIt\u2019s a little late to be making dinner, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n Natty shrugged, said, \u201cI really don\u2019t sleep, so my internal clock isn\u2019t the same as yours.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t sleep?\u201d Sarah parroted, then waved her hand, \u201cnever mind. Stupid question.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cDid you want a bowl? It should be ready,\u201d Natty asked, opening one of the cabinets above the sink.<\/p>\n Sarah had to smile at the quiet absurdity of eating dinner in the Place of Locked Doors. Still, the soup smelled delicious, so she nodded. Natty got two bowls, ladled out two healthy helpings. Passing one of the bowls to Sarah, Natty went to the table. Shrugging, Sarah joined her. Trying the soup, she sighed happily.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is so good,\u201d Sarah said, around another bite.<\/p>\n \u201cThanks,\u201d Natty said, pleased by the compliment.<\/p>\n The chicken noodle soup was like a salve on her nerves. As she ate, Sarah found herself relaxing even more. By the time she reached the bottom of her bowl, Sarah was ready to stay in the Place of Locked Doors for a while.<\/p>\n Natty went to the living room for a second, came back with a phone. She smiled when Sarah gave her a curious look, then dialed the phone.<\/p>\n \u201cHi, Erin,\u201d Natty said, smiling at Sarah, \u201cyeah. She\u2019s here\u2026 How do I do that\u2026 Okay.\u201d<\/p>\n Natty put the phone on the table, then pushed a button. Leaning closer, she said, loudly, \u201cCan you hear me?\u201d<\/p>\n Laughing, Erin said, \u201cYeah. You don\u2019t have to yell.\u201d<\/p>\n Sheepishly, Natty said, \u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHey, Sarah,\u201d Ashley said.<\/p>\n \u201cAshley,\u201d Sarah said, then thought of something, \u201cyou could have told me to wear clothing to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n Laughing, Ashley said, \u201cSorry. Didn\u2019t even think about it. How bad was it?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI sleep in just some panties,\u201d Sarah said, her cheeks hot. She heard Ashley and Erin laughing, and her face was even hotter, \u201cI\u2019m glad you think it\u2019s funny.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt happened to all of us,\u201d Erin said, still laughing.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, welcome to the club,\u201d Ashley said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe club? Maybe a spot in the parade, like the Shriners?\u201d<\/p>\n Erin laughed, \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure we\u2019d get grounded if we showed up in our club attire.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMore like arrested,\u201d Ashley said.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can only get away with walking the streets in lingerie here, at the Place of Locked Doors,\u201d Natty said.<\/p>\n Sarah gave her a curious look and Natty shrugged, said, \u201cLong story.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cDo you mind some more company?\u201d Ashley asked.<\/p>\n \u201cNot at all. I made dinner, and there\u2019s plenty for everyone,\u201d Natty said.<\/p>\n \u201cEnchiladas?\u201d Ashley asked.<\/p>\n Laughing, Natty said, \u201cChicken noodle soup.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAh,\u201d Ashley said.<\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t be like that,\u201d Erin said, laughing.<\/p>\n \u201cThe soup is delicious,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, save us a bowl. We\u2019ll be there in a minute,\u201d Erin said.<\/p>\n \u201cSee you then. Bye,\u201d Natty said, hanging up. She held the phone out to Sarah, asked, \u201cDo you want to invite Mindy?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cUm, can I? I mean, would that be okay?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n Smiling, Natty said, \u201cYeah. Invite her.\u201d<\/p>\n Taking the phone, Sarah looked at the buttons. Sheepishly, she asked, \u201cUm, do you know her number? I have it on my cell phone, but\u2026 I don\u2019t know it by heart.\u201d<\/p>\n Natty took the phone from her, dialed, then handed it back to her. She gathered up the dishes while Sarah waited for Mindy to pick up.<\/p>\n \u201cHey, Natty,\u201d Mindy said, coming on the line. She sounded sleepy.<\/p>\n \u201cGuess again,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n Laughing, Mindy said, \u201cSo the black lingerie works on everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNatty made some bomb chicken noodle soup. You should come try some,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n Mindy sounded amused when she said, \u201cSo, you want me to come there? To the Place of Locked Doors?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI know what you are getting at\u2026 I guess this place isn\u2019t dangerous,\u201d Sarah said, then added, \u201calthough you could have warned me about what to wear to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOh shit,\u201d Mindy said, laughing.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, Natty got an eyeful,\u201d Sarah said, hearing Natty laugh at the sink where she was rinsing out the bowls, \u201canyway, hurry up and get here. Erin and Ashley are coming over, too.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cComing over,\u201d Mindy repeated, laughing, \u201cSounds like Natty\u2019s is down the street, not on another plane of existence.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cJust get here,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m coming,\u201d Mindy said.<\/p>\n The phone went dead in Sarah\u2019s hand, so she set it aside and said to Natty, \u201cLooks like you are going to have a full house.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhy? Is Mindy coming, too?\u201d Ashley asked, as she and Erin came into the kitchen hand in hand.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah,\u201d Sarah said, smiling at them holding hands. It was both weird and made perfect sense that Erin and Ashley were dating. She was still getting used to them being lesbians, but a couple\u2026 She had no problem picturing them together. To paraphrase Forest Gump, they were like peas and carrots.<\/p>\n \u201cNice,\u201d Ashley said, grinning, \u201cthe whole band is here.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah looked at her two friends standing there. It was them but not them. Or maybe this was really them, and their bodies were just empty husks back in the real world. She wondered if she looked as creepy lying in her bed as Mindy had when she flipped over. She pushed the thought away before she could freak herself out, again.<\/p>\n Luckily, she spotted Mindy coming down the stairs. She shook her head when she saw Mindy only wore a pair of panties and a t-shirt. Getting up, she met the girl just inside the kitchen, gave her a hug and a kiss. Pulling back, she said, \u201cYou aren\u2019t wearing pants.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI know,\u201d Mindy said, amused.<\/p>\n \u201cWere you in such a rush, you couldn\u2019t take a second to put some shorts on?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n Smiling, Mindy said, \u201cI wanted to see you. Besides, everyone in this room has seen me in less.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI guess they have,\u201d Sarah said, then laughed, \u201cI guess I can technically say the same.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a nice robe,\u201d Mindy said, then leaned closer, \u201care you wearing anything under it?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cJust some panties,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n \u201cI was hoping Natty let you borrow some of her lingerie,\u201d Mindy said, her blue eyes flashing at Sarah.<\/p>\n \u201cThis robe is revealing enough,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t mean to interrupt,\u201d Ashley said, getting their attention, \u201cbut would you ladies like to join the party?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn a second,\u201d Mindy said, giving Sarah a toe-curling kiss, \u201cokay. Now we can join you.\u201d<\/p>\n A little dazed, Sarah blushed when she saw everyone grinning at her. Taking Mindy\u2019s hand, she said, \u201cSo\u2026 We are all here\u2026 Now what?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFirst things first,\u201d Ashley said, going to the stove, \u201cI need to try this soup. I started smelling when I was still on the stairs.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHelp yourselves,\u201d Natty said, pointing at the cabinet above the sink, \u201cbowls are up there. Cokes in the fridge.\u201d<\/p>\n While the late arrivals got their food, Natty fell in beside Sarah, said, \u201cSo you and Mindy\u2026 You two seem happy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe are\u2026 Well, I am,\u201d Sarah said, watching Mindy ladle some soup into a bowl, \u201cI think I love her.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think you do, too,\u201d Natty said, smiling at her, \u201cand I think she loves you back.\u201d<\/p>\n Rubbing her arms, Sarah said, \u201cI hope so.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHow much have they told you about this place?\u201d Natty asked.<\/p>\n \u201cToo much and probably not enough,\u201d Sarah said, laughing.<\/p>\n \u201cDid they mention the time loop theory they have?\u201d Natty asked.<\/p>\n \u201cUm, no,\u201d Sarah said, meeting the girl\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n \u201cNo time passes in your world for the time you spend here,\u201d Natty said, leaning closer, \u201cyou and Mindy could spend a week here, and it\u2019d still be the night you went to sleep when you get back.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cReally?\u201d Sarah said, frowning, \u201cHow is that possible?\u201d<\/p>\n Laughing, Natty said, \u201cI don\u2019t know. You could ask that question of about a lot of things that happen in the Place of Locked Doors.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut it\u2019s true\u2026 A week over here is nothing over there?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n \u201cErin and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon, were gone for eight days,\u201d Natty said, smiling at the memory, \u201cbut no time had passed when Erin went home.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s\u2026 crazy,\u201d Sarah said, trying to wrap her head around the idea.<\/p>\n \u201cI only bring it up because if you have doubts about Mindy\u2019s feelings matching yours, a romantic couple of days here would help seal the deal,\u201d Natty said, smiling at her, \u201cAs Ashley likes to say, \u2018I\u2019m just putting that out there\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n Returning the smile, Sarah said, \u201cI\u2019ll think about it\u2026 Thanks, Natty.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou are welcome,\u201d Natty said, joining the rest of her guests.<\/p>\n Still mulling it over, Sarah sat at the table with the rest of her friends. She looked at Natty, and she smiled, thinking the dead girl was going to fit into that category, too. Natty was hard not to like.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know,\u201d Ashley said, looking around the table, \u201cmaybe we should make it a thing, the Black Lingerie Club.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe what?\u201d Mindy asked.<\/p>\n \u201cAshley told me, \u2018welcome to the club\u2019,\u201d Sarah said, in the way of explanation for her girlfriend, \u201cwhich became the Black Lingerie Club when I asked what club. We are going to have a float in the parade, a newsletter.\u201d<\/p>\n Laughing, Mindy said, \u201cNewsletter, maybe, but the float\u2026 It\u2019d be pretty cold, wearing anything in Erin\u2019s hiding spot.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, it\u2019s all lace and not a lot of it, at that,\u201d Erin agreed, grinning.<\/p>\n \u201cSeriously,\u201d Ashley said, pointing with her spoon, \u201cwe are already a club, I\u2019m just saying we make it official.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cGet matching t-shirts?\u201d Sarah asked, laughing when Ashley gave her a dirty look, \u201cWhat is the\u2026 purpose of the club?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPurpose?\u201d Ashley asked.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know\u2026 A chess club plays chess\u2026 A motorcycle club rides motorcycles\u2026 What does a lingerie club do?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWear lingerie?\u201d Ashley said, laughing when Sarah gave her a sour look, \u201cI don\u2019t know. She didn\u2019t think she would be as \u2018open-minded\u2019 as Erin was. Then again, she didn\u2019t have the relationship Erin had with Natty. She silently pleaded with them to listen to Natty.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, let\u2019s go,\u201d Erin said.<\/p>\n There came the sound of retreating footsteps, and Sarah let out her pent-up breath in a nervous giggle. She made the mistake of meeting Mindy\u2019s eyes, and those giggles got away from her.
